We had the morning free so went back to Kraków town center for one last time.
After lunch, we rode the bus from Krakow to Auschwitz-Birkenau. As Rick Steves says, "This is a powerful place for learning, reflection, and remembrance". Beginning in 1942, Auschwitz became the largest of the extermination centers where the "Endlösung der Judenfrage" (the final solution to the Jewish question - the Nazi plan to murder European Jews) was carried out. The concentration camp site is where at least 1.1 million innocent people were systematically murdered during World War II.

After a tough, emotional day we returned to Kraków for the evening for some more wandering around.
Returning to the hotel we prepared for the next day's drive through the scenic Tatras Mountains (that form a natural border between Slovakia and Poland) including a lunch stop in Levoča, Slovakia.
